Free Crochet Owl Hat Pattern
Winky Winky the Owl

Let’s face it, almost everyone has an owl hat pattern but I wanted to make one for my daughter since she loves owls.  I can never just follow someone else’s pattern, I always have to make my own.  So I did, but I tried to make it different than all the other owl hats out there.  This is the only owl hat I have seen that has one eye open and one eye winking.  It is also the only one I’ve ever seen with a ring of color around the eyes… now I’m not saying there aren’t any others like it, but none that I could find.

Winky Winky the Owl is a great Spring hat since she is made with 100% cotton.  She will keep your little ones warm on those breezy but brisk Spring days, but she won’t get them all sweaty like an acrylic hat would.  The hat pattern is written in four sizes, 3-6mo, 6-12mo, 12-24 mo and 3-5 years, but can easily be modified to fit anyone.  This sizing chart is a helpful tool to customize any hat pattern.

I recommend using my seamless method described here.  Use the second method listed for this hat.

I hope you like her and enjoy making your own.  If you run into any problems with the pattern please comment below or email me at [email protected].

The 3-6mo size goes up to 40 stitches and 14 rows before the ear flap. You would increase to only 35sts. So in round/row 4 make it “increase in every 6th sp” instead of every 3rd sp for 35sts. Then only do a total of 13 rows before the 1st ear flap (so omit line 14). They follow the rest of the pattern, except in round/row 19 change “21 spaces” to “16 spaces”. Good luck, hope it goes well for you.

    Hello,

Great hat! But I would like to make it not using the seamless method. Can you provide instructions. Thanks!

      Lorene says

Just follow the stitch counts. The pattern does not need to be rewritten in order to follow not using the seamless method. Just don’t skip the first st after creating your chain (which will count as your first st in each row)

I am kinda new at this and don’t really understand how to weave the eyes together. Is there a video for this, or a more simple way to explain what to do? Thanks in advance :)

Hi I’m very new at this, and have always used Icelandic instructions. And I was just wondering, I have never seen this , at the back of each step. What does that mean? Repeat twenty/thirty times?
I’m sorry if this is a stupid question. But I’m just trying to figure this out since I really want to make this hat for my 9 mo daughter.

Thanks so much for this Pattern :)

anything in brackets <> is the stitches you should have at the end of the row! So at the end of Round 2 you should have 20 stitches <20>, at the end of Round 3 you should have 30 stitches <30>

Cute pattern – would help if it was made clear and explicit that the seamless technique only works if you sl st into the back half of the stitch and not the whole stitch. If you slip stitch into the whole stitch, you will still have a seam. I think the pattern could be made better if this technique were laid out in the pattern and not in the middle of a second article about the technique.

      Lorene says

Thank you for your comments.. I’d like to answer them here. The seamless method works better with some yarns if you sl st in the back loops only, as dictated in the tutorial… however with many yarns it will still appear invisible if you sl st in both loops. And the reason I do not put the whole seamless method info into the pattern is two fold 1) I use this method with every round pattern, that would be an awful lot to write out every time hence… 2) many of my fans already know this method.. they would not like it if I wrote out all the info every time I used it.

Since I can’t please everyone all of the time, I make it so that you can choose to view the complete tutorial only if you choose.
